Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada and raised in the US. She has worked as media critic since. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in social and political thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she's well-known and has been a speaker at TEDxWomenXOXO and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. While a student at university she became interested in the issues surrounding gender equality and the rights of women at an early stage. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s determined to make the series of videos on the internet which would explore how gender is represented in video games. However, she became the target of cyber-bullying. The incident did not deter her, rather it strengthened her resolve as an activist for women in media. She has won several awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency as an educational organization that focuses on how women are represented in popular culture narratives.
